South Africa to prosecute eight for cargo cartel PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 30 July 2010
Eight cargo carriers including SAA Cargo face allegations they operated a cartel to set airfreight fuel surcharges and rates for cargo flown into and out of South Africa.

Advocacy and stakeholder manager at the Competition Commission Oupa Bodibe said the eight - SAA, British Airways, Air France Cargo, KLM Cargo, Alitalia Cargo, Cargolux International, Singapore Airlines and Martinair Cargo - had been referred to the Competition Tribunal for adjudication.

The Commission has asked the tribunal to impose an administrative penalty of 10 per cent of annual turnover on each of the carriers involved if found guilty.

Whistleblower Lufthansa was granted immunity from prosecution on condition it fully co-operated in the investigation and prosecution.
