IATA amends carrier’s liabilities under Conditions of Contract

IATA has approved and declared effective amendments to the carrier’s liabilities under the Conditions of Contract (Cargo Services Conference Resolution 600b). Resolution 600b is the abbreviated and modernised “Conditions of Contract” that invokes both Warsaw Convention and Montreal Convention.

The main changes include revised compensation from member airlines for delayed or loss of cargo and permitting a plain paper version of the air waybill with the new Conditions of Contract printed on the reverse side. This is expected to significantly improve the industry’s push for an e-freight environment.

The Australian Federation of International Forwarders (AFIF) which played a significant role internationally and domestically in promoting the amendments has welcomed the improvements.

Chief executive Brian Lovell said the changes will give clarity in terms of the liability provisions of the Conditions of Contract.

Resolution 600b will be effective on 17 March 2008 and will replace the Conditions of Contract, Resolution 600b (II) on that date.  There will be no overlap between the effectiveness of 600b and 600b (II). The full document can be examined at http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/resolution600b.htm
