New Asia cargo option

LUFTHANSA and Deutsche Post are to launch a cargo carrier focused on airfreight and express shipments in and out of Asia. The airline will be jointly owned by Lufthansa Cargo and Post’s DHL Express parcel delivery division and will operate 11 Boeing 777-200LRF aircraft. Flights will begin in April 2009.

The two companies initially will invest 50 million euros (A$81.4 million) and the new airline will have annual turnover of some 500 million euros.

“Joint utilisation of aircraft capacities will enable us to harness growth opportunities cost efficiently,” said Lufthansa Cargo head Carsten Spohr.

“DHL will be commercially responsible for operating the express network with additional cargo from Lufthansa Cargo on weekdays. Flight schedules at weekends will suit the customer requirements of Lufthansa Cargo with on-load freight on those flights from DHL,” he added.

The cargo airline plans to serve destinations including Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai, Bombay, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Nagoya, Chicago and New York.

Lufthansa Cargo and DHL Express have operated a network together between Europe, Asia and the US since March 2004, a large part of which is due later this year to start operating out of Leipzig/Halle airport, where DHL Express is also moving its main European hub. -Jack Handley
