Mexico, USA launch Open Skies

Mexico and the USA have extended air services with an Open Skies agreement that allows US and Mexican carriers to operate any trans-border route they like, and use fifth and sixth freedom rights to manage flows between Mexico and other markets.

“Cargo carriers will now have expanded opportunities to provide services that were not available under the more restrictive agreement,” said the US Department of Transportation.

On the Mexican side, it has been mainly low-cost passenger airlines that want to mount or expand services to the US.

US carriers including freighter operators have shown no great desire to boost flights.

However, international carriers that operate freighters in Mexico have reported strong growth in segments including the automotive sector.

Between 2013 and 2020, seven new auto plants are scheduled to open.
