Costa Allegra to operate range of Asian itineraries

ASIAN travellers are being targeted by Europe’s largest cruise line this northern summer following the launch of its newly launched flagship — Costa Serena.

The cruise line — Costa Crociere SpA— says it foresees continual growth in passengers following the launch of the new ship, with the industry remaining “very strong” in Asia-Pacific.

“Costa Serena is a showcase of cutting-edge technology that will set us even further apart from other tour operators,” said Costa Crociere SpA Group chairman and chief executive officer, Pier Luigi Foschi. “In just five months in 2007, we have already clocked up about 880,000 bookings, equalling the entire volume of guests carried in 2006.”

Christened in Marseille on May 19, Costa Serena is the largest Costa cruise ship and at 114,000 gross tonnage is claimed to be the biggest European cruise liner in terms of capacity. The ship can accommodate 3780 passengers in 1500 cabins.

This northern summer, it will cruise from Venice to Greece, Turkey and Croatia and from Savona to the Canary Islands in winter 2007/08.

A subsidiary of Carnival Corporation — the world’s largest cruise operator — Costa Crociere SpA currently operates a fleet of 12 ships with three under construction. By 2010, it says the fleet will be 15 strong with a total passenger capacity of about 30,800.

The Italian cruise line entered the Asian market last year with one of it ships — Costa Allegra — operating round-trip voyages from Shanghai in summer and Hong Kong in winter. This coming southern summer, the ship will operate three, four and five-day itineraries from Shanghai and Tianjin, with South Korea and Japan its main destinations.
