India promises better future for air cargo

India's Ministry of Civil Aviation has described its plan to offer a 'common information technology platform' to streamline country’s air cargo industry as a "work in progress”.

Civil Aviation secretary Rajeev Nayan Choubey said: "We intend to complete (the common IT platform) for the air cargo industry within next two years."

The intent is to ensure shippers can select the most cost-effective routes to move their cargo.

According to the Ministry, India’s air cargo industry is expected to grow nine per cent in the next few years, with cargo capacity to hit 10 million tonnes. It also expects air freight volume to grow 400 per cent by 2027.

Choubey identified perishables including pharma and express cargo as two segments with strong potential.
