HGVs pay most toward UK road repairs

The UK's Freight Transport Association says heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) pay three times more in tax than the estimated cost of damage they do to roads infrastructure.
The total tax take from all motor vehicles was GBP33.5 billion in 2015-16, more than seven times as high as the road maintenance budget, which stood at GBP4.7 billion.

HGV taxes (including vehicle excise duty, road user levy and fuel duty) raised in the same period was GBP4.4 billion.

The cost estimate for infrastructure damage caused by HGVs totalled GBP1.5 billion.
