Qantas to boost Canberra operations

Qantas is set to increase frequency on its busy Sydney service and plans to build a new crew base in Canberra.

The carrier will introduce its new 72-seat Bombardier Q400 aircraft to the Canberra service in mid-August.

Meanwhile, a report just out has found there could be sufficient outbound demand to justify up to four flights a week between Canberra and Singapore.

It’s the key finding of the report, which was commissioned jointly by the Canberra International Airport and Australian Capital Tourism.
A major project started nearly three months ago will lengthen and strengthen Canberra International Airport’s main runway.

The airport’s director of projects, Ben Rayner, says that when completed the new runway will give Canberra true international capacity.

“It will give us the capacity to provide services to Singapore, Tokyo and Dubai. We are already pursuing opportunities with Qantas, Emirates and Singapore Airlines,” he said.
