United opens Newark cargo centre

United Airlines has opened a 165,000-square-foot Newark, New York import/export cargo facility.

Mike Hanna, the carrier's senior vice president of airport operations said imports will include pharmaceuticals, flowers, fish, perishables, apparel, machine parts and more.

It will be headed by Rory Lawson, have a staff of 75 and operate 24/7.

For temperature-sensitive cargo, there are three climate-control storage areas. Two of them handle items between 35 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit (about 1.5 to 8 degrees Celsius) and another is for items that must be stored between 59 and 77 degrees (15 to 25 degrees Celsius).
