Data centres to see carbon tax impacts?

While much global attention focuses on airline carbon emissions, the Kickstart Forum in Queensland saw IT companies in Australia and New Zealand say the likelihood of carbon taxes may prompt a rethink of operation and planning of data centres.

Analysts have said some form of emissions tax will be in place in both countries in 2011 or 2012.

It is estimated that data centres account for 1.5 per cent of all emissions, a level only slightly lower than the airline industry.

The IT industry is now considering new low-power consumption devices and tools, to address raised power costs following any carbon tax.
