Air freight up 20pc in 2010

International air freight grew by more than 20 per cent in 2010, despite severe weather in Europe and North America at the end of the year.

The International Air Transport Association's (IATA's) director-general Giovanni Bisignani says the world is moving again as airlines ended the year ahead of 2008 volumes - albeit with a profit margin of only 2.7 per cent.

"The challenge is to turn the demand for mobility into sustainable profits," he said.

Air cargo demand was 6.7 per cent higher in December than a year earlier after rising 5.4 per cent in November, with full-year totals up 20.6 per cent.
