Government queried on Air India purchases

India's Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reportedly is querying the government over its decision to buy 111 planes for Air India and also why the promised maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility has not yet been organised with Airbus.

The Civil Aviation Ministry is understood to have replied that Air India needed replacements for its ageing fleet in order to compete with rivals.

Competing airlines were taking away passengers through their new and young fleet and the MRO work was in progress, the government said.
