More airports want private screening

More large US airports are considering hiring private contractors to replace the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA's) security screening, saying the moves are aimed at efficiencies rather than cost savings.

The Washington Post says 16 airports including San Francisco have made the change since 2002.

Airports are required to submit requests for private screeners to the TSA and the TSA, which pays for the cost of screening, then must approve of the company to which a private contract is awarded.
