The Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a US plane using a bomb hidden in his underwear was Yemen trained, US federal prosecutors say.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has now been charged with a new count of conspiracy to commit terrorism in addition to six previous counts relating to attempted murder and carrying a bomb on a crowded passenger jet.

Abdulmutallab had boarded a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit and tried to ignite a bomb sewn into his underwear, prosecutors said.
