New EC security rules a fortnight away

Global traders are being reminded they must make an electronic declaration to Customs with security data on goods before they leave or enter the European Union as of January 1, 2011.

The new rule aims to increase international trade security.

Traders have had a transitional period to adapt their electronic systems to these new rules since July 2009.

The type of security data varies according to the means of transport and the reliability of traders involved in the operation.

In some cases it will include a description of the goods, information on the consignor or exporter, the routing and any potential hazards.

Time limits for submitting advance security data vary according to the means of transport, from 24 hours in advance of loading for maritime cargo to one hour before arrival for road traffic and less for specified air transport.
