Sympathy strikes add to Finnair and other airlines' woes

Sympathy strikes by transport sector unions in Finland in support of carrier Finnair's cabin crews are escalating and causing increased problems for the airline and other carriers that rely on their ground services.

The Transport Workers' Union AKT on Tuesday stopped deliveries of fuel for Finnair planes and mechanics have said they will not carry out maintenance on Finnair planes.

Baggage handlers also are joining in and the union representing railway engineers has said extra trains promised as an alternative for passengers unable to get flights will not operate.

Another five transport unions next week are due to decide on further possible sympathy action.
