Air France to appeal EU cartel fine

Europe's Air France-KLM says the size of the fines levied against it and 10 other international airlines by the European Commission for participating in a global air cargo cartel is "disproportionate," and said it will appeal.

The European Commission fined 11 airlines including Qantas almost EUR800 million.

UK carrier British Airways was fined EUR104 million, Air France-KLM EUR340 million and Cargolux Airlines EUR79.9 million, Singapore Airlines EUR74.8 million, SAS EUR70.2 million, Cathay Pacific EUR57.1 million, Japan Airlines EUR35.7 million and Air Canada EUR21 million.

Australia's Qantas and Latin America's LAN Chile were both fined about EUR8 million.

Under EU rules, companies can be fined 10 per cent of annual sales for antitrust violations.

The Commission typically opts for a penalty of about two to three per cent of sales in cartel cases.
