Another security weakness exposed

Switzerland-based forwarder Panalpina has admitted it made 'thousands' of bribes from 2002 to 2007 - in order to avoid inspection, documentation requirements and customs duties - to government officials in Russia, Nigeria, Angola, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

It now has agreed to pay nearly US$82 million in penalties.

Commentators said bribery renders security procedures useless and enables bombs to be carried on aircraft.
