Germany proposes security plan

German Interior minister Thomas De Maiziere this week will present the EU with a plan to improve freight transport security.

Maiziere's most contentious proposal is a mechanism to filter out suspicious post using freight lists. This would involve obtaining access to the databases of freight companies such as UPS and FedEx - an idea that might breach post secrecy rules.

He also may propose the establishment of a 'black list' of airports where security controls are weak.

Overall, he wants EU states to co-ordinate their security measures and centralise the oversight of air freight.
