Qantas grounds A380 fleet

Following an engine failure on an A380 flight out of Singapore en route to Sydney, Australia’s Qantas has suspended A380 services.

No-one was hurt in the incident, which saw QF32 return to Singapore.

"We will suspend all A380 takeoffs until we are fully confident we have sufficient information about QF32," said ceo Alan Joyce.

An investigation into the incident is already under way in partnership with planemaker Airbus and engine manufacturer Rolls Royce.

The cancellations initially impacted London and US services, with QF10 (London to Singapore) on 05 November operated by a B777 (chartered from British Airways).

Meanwhile, Rolls Royce engine customer Singapore Airlines has announced it also will suspend A380 flights while it investigates the incident.

"Our engine manufacturer Rolls Royce and aircraft manufacturer Airbus have advised us to conduct precautionary checks on our A380 aircraft...resulting from this development, Singapore Airlines will be delaying all flights operating our A380 aircraft," the carrier said.

Lufthansa, too will check the aircraft, but will conduct its engine checks during "scheduled turnaround times" on the ground.
