Greek bombs prompt blanket ban

Greece stopped all overseas air shipments of mail for 48 hours and screened thousands of airfreight packages on Wednesday after 14 mail bombs targeted at embassies and European leaders were discovered.

One of the Greek bombs was addressed to German chancellor Angela Merkel. The bomb was deactivated before it could do any harm.

Germany now wants the European Union to introduce new security measures against militant attacks via air freight to help improve what was described as a 'patchwork of different rules around the world'.

EU ministers next week will debate how to respond.
