Continental Q2 profit close to partner United

USA carrier Continental Airlines is back in the black in Q2 with a 19 per cent revenue rise.

Soon to merge with United Airlines, Continental reported a net profit of US$233 million - about the same dollar value as its loss in the second quarter last year.

Ceo Jeff Smisek said the airline was even able to raise ticket prices.

The earnings figure came close to matching that of merger partner United, which reported a profit of US$273 million.

The envisaged "merger between equals" - assuming shareholder and regulator approvals - will deliver the world's largest air carrier in terms of passenger numbers, bigger even than Delta.
