Haneda opens fourth runway, new terminal

The new international terminal at Tokyo's Haneda airport has opened, as has a new runway, signalling the launch of international services for local and overseas airlines.

On October 31, Haneda began handling regular international flights for the first time in 32 years, using a new fourth runway in Tokyo Bay to connect to 17 foreign airports.

By comparison, Tokyo Narita airport serves 97 foreign cities in 43 countries.

The Japanese government says the "dual Tokyo hub" strategy could boost foreign arrivals by 2.2 million a year and encourage another 3.9 million Japanese to travel abroad.
