Qantas planes have faulty security - ALAEA

An engineers union says Australia's Qantas puts the safety of pilots and passengers at risk by operating Sunstate Airlines' aircraft that have faulty cockpit doors. Qantas has denied the charge by the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA).

ALAEA federal secretary Stephen Purvinas said Sunstate staff identified faulty security locks on cockpit doors and reported the problem to management.

But the union says despite new locks being fitted, the doors can still be easily opened.

"Management are aware of the problem, have provided no solution and the aircraft continue to fly in breach of Australia's Department of Transport regulations," Purvinas said.
