New water scanner invented

A UK firm has developed an airport scanner that can tell the difference between water and liquid explosives and the manufacturer has been given official EU approval to use it at European airports.

The device also can check the barcode on drinks bottles to make sure the contents haven't been tampered with.

It is hoped the machine will speed an end to the liquid bans that add to delays for millions of travellers world-wide.

The ban on liquids in hand luggage was imposed in August 2006 after police uncovered a plot to smuggle explosives on to planes using drinks containers.
