ATA challenges cargo fee

The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), an association of about 20 airlines, is challenging a Hawaiian, USA law that requires carriers to charge their cargo customers a freight inspection fee.

Elsewhere, another group has said the fee adds as much as US$5 million to ex-Hawaii shipping costs.

The ATA alleges that the federal Anti-Head Tax Act and Airline Deregulation Act prohibit the state from levying or collecting a tax or fee on an air carrier.

The association also is petitioning the US Department of Transportation and asking the agency to determine the legality of the inspection fee statute.
