Futurist pours cold water on biofuels

World Future Council director Stefan Schurig has poured cold water on biofuels for the aviation industry.

Schurig criticised plant-derived biofuels because of conflict with growing food, and the impact of fertilisers needed to grow biofuel plants.

"I see no long-term future for biofuel in the aviation industry," he said.

"Hydrogen from renewable energy is the answer for aviation."

Speaking at Eco Symposium 2010, Schurig also said travel and tourism was responsible for 230 million jobs and 10 per cent of gross domestic product around the world and that the sector must mitigate its greenhouse gas emissions.
