Virgin keeps trans-Tasman options open

Australia's Virgin Blue says it will continue to negotiate with US and Australasian regulators to set up an international network through alliances with Etihad, Air New Zealand and Delta Air Lines.

Its chief executive John Borghetti said: "I firmly believe we have very strong propositions for all three alliances.

"All three deliver huge consumer benefits for the Australian travelling public and so we will continue to go through the process and present what we believe are compelling arguments."

Borghetti also said every business had contingencies and (if regulators blocked partnership plans) Virgin Blue was no different.

He added there were no plans, at this stage, to pull out of trans-Tasman routes if the Air NZ alliance did not proceed.
