Degree course next year - AFIF

More details have come to hand on the Australian Federation of International Forwarders’ (AFIF’s) new degree course in International Freight Forwarding and Logistics.

Upon receiving funding authorisation from the Cargo Automation Development Fund (CADF), a trust managed by Tradegate Australia, AFIF formalised an agreement with the University of Tasmania’s Australian Maritime College (AMC) to offer the degree.

The degree will be the first in Australia to offer a definitive career pathway for school leavers and new entrants to the industry. People in the industry will be able to join the program with recognition of prior learning through TAFE and other institutions offering relevant Certificate and Diploma level courses, according to Brian Lovell, ceo of AFIF.

“The International Forwarding Industry is an essential part of the Australian economy,” said Lovell. "This degree will give this industry the long-awaited recognition, professionalism and accreditation it deserves.

“It has taken two years to get to this point and we are delighted.

"The funding will enable writing of primarily third year level degree subjects by industry experts. These people will work closely with AFIF and the AMC to ensure the content is relevant to the Australian international forwarding industry.

"With the partnership agreement in place, AFIF will be working to co-ordinate the linkage between industry and the AMC and will source the appropriate level of expertise within both the local and international forwarding industry.

“It is envisaged that the degree course will be offered in 2011 and students will be enrolled from that time,” said Jim Merrigan, AFIF director for education and training.

The course will be available by distance learning and also on campus and through lectures at selected universities around the country.
