Virgin-Delta pact under threat

Although the trans-Pacific alliance between Virgin Blue and Delta Air lines has long been seen as a 'done thing', the US Department of Transportation (Dot) reportedly has 'tentatively' turned it down. Media say the DoT says the planned alliance would not produce sufficient public benefits to justify a grant of antitrust immunity and the tie-up fails to provide positive effects to the consumer "such as lower fares or increased capacity".

Virgin and Delta now have two weeks to contest the DoT preliminary decision, with an outcome due by early October at latest.
