United, Continental merger given green light

USA carriers United Airlines and Continental Airlines have been given the okay to proceed with their merger.

They now need only shareholder approval for their US$3 billion all-stock merger to proceed.

To win Justice Department backing, the companies gave up rights for 18 daily round-trip flights at Newark airport in New Jersey to Southwest Airlines.
