International airline consolidation needed - IATA

International Air Transport Association (IATA) chief Giovanni Bisignani has reiterated the Association's belief that international consolidation of airlines is essential for the industry to move forward.

Regional consolidation - in the United States and Europe - has helped airline profitability, he said, but a wider playing field was needed.

"We need transatlantic consolidation (in order) to become a more integrated and global industry," said Bisignani.

IATA this week also said international passenger demand in July was 9.2 per cent higher than July 2009, but carrier recovery has entered a slower phase.

However, Bisignani said the worst is over for the airline industry following the global financial crisis.
