Alaska Air cuts fuel use, emissions

US carrier Alaska Airlines has reported a recent test flight that burned less fuel and decreased emissions by 35 per cent in comparison with a traditional flight and landing.

The flight - under its 'Greener Skies' project - focused on utilising satellite-based guidance technology.

The test flight used RNP (Required Navigation Performance), a satellite guided technology for flying more direct and continuous descent approaches.

The airline says it will cut fuel use by 2.1 million gallons every year and also reduce 22,000 metric tons of carbon emissions.
