Thames airport plan still kicking

Plans to build an airport in the Thames Estuary, London, UK - promoted by London mayor Boris Johnson - are still bubbling along despite widespread opposition.

Johnson wants the facility built on a man-made island in the mouth of the estuary to relieve pressure on other airports in the south east of England.

A spokeswoman for Johnson said: "The mayor believes it is in the long-term interests of London and the south-east region to consider a range of different options to help address airport capacity in and around the capital.

"An airport in the Thames estuary is clearly one of the options that should be looked at and the mayor believes that potentially it has much to recommend it."

The ConDem government has said it does not support the plans, which also have aroused opposition from politicians, residents and conservationists in the region.
