Transport dragging the chain on green initiatives

A new report says transportation companies are lagging behind other sectors when it comes to climate change.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) report said transport could have a "major long-term (negative) impact on climate change" if strategic investments are not made.

Analysts who surveyed 291 of the largest transport companies in the world said only 36 per cent of them had set carbon and energy targets, compared to 51 per cent of the "Global 500 Index" of companies across all sectors.

CDP looked at firms including airlines, automakers, train operators, car rental firms and freight companies for the study.

In terms of commitment to reduce emissions, it ranked South American firms highest at 60 per cent, followed by 52 per cent of European firms, 47 per cent of North American firms, 30 per cent of Australian and New Zealand businesses and 18 per cent of Asian firms.

"The overwhelming conclusion is that the sector as a whole needs to transform and realise the opportunity to make a profound impact on the environment and the business benefits to reducing emissions," the CDP document said.
