EPIC wants to halt USA scanner use

A US public interest group has filed a lawsuit against the country's federal government seeking to end the use of full-body scanners at airports.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed the lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

It wants both backscatter and active millimeter wave technology use suspended because of concerns about privacy, health effects, religious freedom ramifications and effectiveness.

EPIC staff counsel Ginger McCall called the technologies an invasion of privacy and also queried whether they could be properly calibrated for use by non-specialist airport staff operators.
