PAL facing pilot-driven loss?

Philippine Airlines (PAL) says it may post a loss in its current fiscal year because of the recent pilot defections that led to flight cancellations.

Philippines-based PAL previously had said it expected to return to profitability in the 12 months to March 2011 after posting a net loss of US$14.3 million in its previous fiscal year.

However, "We wish to confirm that (PAL) may have to revise its targets because the cancellation of several flights has affected the revenue of PAL," the airline's parent PAL Holdings said in a statement.

Twenty-five pilots and first officers of PAL's short-haul Airbus aircraft quit last week and left for higher paying jobs abroad.

The move forced the airline to cancel nearly two dozen flights.

In the past few days, PAL cabin crew have threatened industrial action over the carrier's crewing practices.
