Qantas to keep Aust air Express and Star Track Express shares

Australia's Qantas wants a base in mainland China that it can use to serve Europe, but needs European permissions, according to ceo Alan Joyce.

Joyce said China offered a ''huge opportunity'' in both passenger and freight traffic.

Shanghai has been considered the most likely hub site in the past.

Joyce also said Qantas's 46 per cent stake in the Fijian airline, Air Pacific, would be the last of its non-core assets sold.

Its half stakes in the freight ventures Australian air Express and Star Track Express would be retained, he said.
