GE markets rail freight system

GE Transportation makes locomotives, but it now is marketing a system it describes as an 'air traffic control system for freight rail'.

The software, called GE's RailEdge Movement Planner, is designed to allow freight trains to travel faster, use less fuel and therefore save money.

RailEdge uses railroad logistics and traffic-control systems to analyse train schedules and create the best plan for a train to get to its destination.

The system can prevent delays and increase the average speed of trains in a rail network by two-to-four miles per hour.

An increase of one mph can save a rail network as much as US$200 million a year, GE says.
