Euro carriers seek ash compensation

European airlines Thomson and Thomas Cook are joining a number of other UK carriers calling for government compensation because of the recent ash cloud crisis.

The group now comprises British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Monarch, Jet2, BMI, Flybe, easyjet and Ryanair.

They say European authorities, including the UK's Civil Aviation Authority, over-reacted by imposing a blanket flight ban and that airlines should not have to bear the costs of that ban.

They also may call for a review of the European 'denied boarding' regulation that makes airlines responsible for recompensing stranded passengers for amounts that exceed the airfares paid.
