Air France group to exit freighter division?

Massive losses from its air freight division could see the Air France group significantly reduce its air cargo capacity, French daily Figaro reported Saturday.

The company is expected to tell employees on Monday about the division's closure, the paper said, with cargo henceforth carried only in the bellies of passenger aircraft.

Air France’s air freight division has lost US$809.9 million in the last two years and has shrunk from 47 per cent to 26 per cent of goods transported by the company.

Earlier in May it announced it would transfer some of its 29 freighter aircraft to Amsterdam-based subsidiary Martinair.

The Air France group also recently sold two yet-to-be delivered B777 freighters to Federal Express and leased three 747-400 freighters to Russia’s Air Bridge.
