Lufthansa reins in costs

Germany's Lufthansa Group has announced an overall operating profit of EUR876 million for 2010, including EUR382 million from Lufthansa's own passenger business. Subsidiary Bmi posted a loss of EUR145 million.

The total figure is a 500 per cent increase on 2009's operating profit of EUR130 million.

The group said the result was "mainly due to a rise in demand and sales in international passenger and freight traffic, as well as cost reduction measures."

As well as the Bmi loss, Austrian Airlines lost EUR66 million, Germanwings lost EUR39 million.

Swiss posted an operating profit of EUR298 million.
