ILLEGAL IMPORTS FOUND AT FREIGHT FORWARDER’S FACILITY

Random checks by customs officers on air cargo at a freight forwarding facility at Adelaide Airport has led to the discovery of a quantity of the drug precursor – ephedrine - which they say was hidden in unaccompanied baggage.

The officers found the prohibited goods after noticing concealment in one of the sides of a suitcase which had arrived on a flight from Malaysia.

Ephedrine is a pharmaceutical chemical that can be diverted from legitimate use to the illegal manufacture of methamphetamines. Its importation without permission is prohibited.

Customs officers later raided houses in Waikerie in South Australia’s Riverland.
Investigations are continuing and charges are expected to be laid soon.
The maximum penalty for importing such goods in contravention of the Customs Act is A$100,000 and/or a five-year jail term.
