LUFTHANSA MOVES TO ASIA VIA KAZAKHSTAN

LUFTHANSA Cargo is now routing MD-11 freighter flights to and from Asia via Kazakhstan’s capital Astana.

The Lufthansa Cargo station at Fairbanks in Alaska has been closed and Lufthansa also has ceased using Almaty in Kazakhstan as a stopover. It plans to shift more flights to Astana from the beginning of July.

Astana, with more than 40 take-offs and landings per week, will become Lufthansa Cargo’s second-largest cargo airport after Frankfurt.

Lufthansa Cargo chairman Stefan Lauer said “By flying to Astana, Lufthansa Cargo will be able to significantly reduce flight times to Asia. That will mean shorter transport times for our customers, particularly to Japan. At the same time, focusing on just one stopover point will simplify operations and improve the stability of our services to Asia.”
