SAS CREATES NEW HANDLING COMPANY FOR SCANDINAVIA

SAS Cargo has established an independent legal entity - Spirit Air Cargo Handling Group AB - to handle air cargo on 12 airport terminals throughout Scandinavia. The move is to reduce the increasing amount of Scandinavian air cargo that is trucked to airports south of Scandinavia every day and flown out of there.

SAS Cargo has "corporatized" its air cargo handling activities in order to focus more closely on its business area, which is facing increasing competition.

“Independence will make it easier for the terminals to create their own profile in the Scandinavian market for air cargo handling,” said Kenneth Marx, president and chief executive officer of SAS Cargo Group A/S. “This will improve the terminals opportunities to maintain and increase the amount of customers.”

Spirit Air Cargo Handling Group AB is100 per cent owned by SAS Cargo Group A/S.

In 2004, Spirit Air Cargo Handling was established in Sweden at the terminals in Stockholm and Gothenburg, and together with the new Spirit companies in Denmark and Norway, is expected to be a strong player in the Scandinavian market.

Earlier this year SAS Cargo outsourced its terminal activities at Newark, USA to Total Airport Services and with the establishment of Spirit Air Cargo Handling Group AB, all air cargo handling activities have been separated from SAS Cargo.
