US passes pax cargo law

IT’s taken a long time to move through the US legislative maze, but the ‘9/11 Bill’ argued about and negotiated over by Congress for several years has been passed by a huge 371-40 majority in the House of Representatives (85-8 in the Senate) and sent to President George Bush for signing.  A core provision of the law will require screening of all cargo carried on passenger aircraft.

Bangkok freight’s fate hangs in the balance

BANGKOK’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, officially opened in September 2006, has already reached its first-phase capacity handling 44 million passengers to date. Cargo space also is stretched, with authorities now considering transferring express freight to the former international airport at Don Mueang. The 125-billion baht (US$4.6 billion) Suvarnabhumi Airport cargo terminals, with a combined area of 568,000 sq m., are capable of handling three million tonnes of cargo a year. The cargo capacity could be enlarged to process 6.4 million tonnes after the airport is expanded fully in phase-two development.

IATA’s 2008 cargo meet will cover ‘20 events in one single gathering

BUILDING on the success of this year’s inaugural event in Mexico City, the IATA World Cargo Symposium 2008 will be held in Rome from March 3-6.  It is being billed by IATA as ‘over 20 cargo events in one single gathering’.
A highlight of the program will be a full day plenary session, created around a ‘service to customers’ theme chaired by Aleks Popovich, IATA’s global head of cargo.
