France to introduce 'modest' green tax

France is to introduce a departure tax for airlines to help support the environment, its Transport minister says.

It hopes to raise the tax will raise around EUR180 million a year from 2020.
The new French tax will be EUR1.50 for flights within France or the European Union, EUR3 for economy flights out of the EU, EUR9 for intra-EU business class and up to EUR18 for business class tickets out of the EU. Transit flights will not be taxed.
Transport minister Elisabeth Borne said the tax would finance daily transport in France, mostly local trains.
Air France said the new tax would significantly hurt its competitiveness and would represent an additional cost of over EUR60 million per year.
