Volcanic eruption kills tourists in NZ

A volcanic eruption in New Zealand has left five dead and several missing, with 23 rescued.

Tourists were walking inside the crater of White Island (Whakaari) volcano moments before Monday's eruption.

The privately-owned island hosts day tours and offers scenic flights.

Police said rescuers on Monday were not able to access the island because of the risk of further eruptions.

Fewer than 50 people were on the island for the eruption, and both New Zealand and overseas tourists are believed to have been involved.
