Makower raises delegate ire at IT&CMA meet PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 October 2007
The IT&CMA annual conference, meetings, incentive and events mart being held in Bangkok this week opened on a controversial note when keynote speaker Joel Makower advocated greater use of video conferencing and less air travel to combat global warming.

Speaking about the impact of tourism on the environment, Makower, the founder of greenbiz.com and chairman of Greener World Media, said major companies would increasingly seek to improve their ‘green’ credentials by reducing air travel and switching to video conferencing.

He qualified the statement by saying there would always be a need for some face-to-face meetings, but major companies would want to win favour with their consumers by being seen as responsible citizens when it came to the environment.

His speech prompted a walk out by two Jet Airways executives and upset other suppliers, many of whom were there representing hoteliers and airlines.

Lianne Kelly-Maartens, marketing manager for Sun International in India, said it was the wrong audience for a reduced travel argument. She said she couldn’t believe her ears when he started to advocate reduced travel and more video conferencing (with its implied reduced role for hotels) as the way of the future.

“I am well aware of the need to embrace change for the sake of the environment but many people in the audience sponsored the keynote speakers’ attendance through their delegate fees,” said Kelly-Maartens. “It’s like the Rifle Association presenting at a gun control convention.”

Maartens also was angry that Makower did not provide solutions to the many issues he raised and did not submit to a question and answer session with the audience which could have provided more balance.
Makower may face closer scrutiny of his ideas on day 2 of the conference, when he is scheduled to speak again. The program promises a question and answer session as part of his session.
