Two cases of MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, have been confirmed in the United States and health alerts are to be posted in 22 US airports informing travellers about the virus and its symptoms.

As of late last week, there had been 538 cases of MERS in 17 countries with 145 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

The virus was first detected in 2012 and it has about a 30 per cent mortality rate.
